John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension

It's a big event when guitar legend John McLaughlin is finally back at Moldejazz! His planned appearance at the anniversary festival in 2020, like all other international features that year, was cancelled. McLaughlin has just turned 80 but is extremely "still going strong" and together with his brilliant band "4th Dimension" he makes it clear that he is still one of the world's leading guitarists!

John McLaughlin has been a leading guitarist for over 50 years, both in traditional contemporary jazz and in more rock and fusion settings.

In 1969 he left England for the United States, where he soon became involved in Miles Davis 'electric jazz revolution via Tony Williams' group Lifetime. On the Miles Davis classic "Bitches Brew", one of the tracks of all excess bears his name! McLaughlin's reputation as a first-class session musician eventually led to collaborations with performers such as Carla Bley, Wayne Shorter and The Rolling Stones! Together with guitar colleague Carlos Santana, he became very interested in Indian music and religion around 1973, which clearly affects the groups Mahavishnu Orchestra and not least Shakti, which became McLauglin's two main projects throughout the 1970s. It was with the Mahavishnu Orchestra that McLaughlin first visited Molde and the House of Sports in 1986, a particularly memorable moment in Moldejazz history.

McLaughlin was back at the festival and Bjørnsonhuset in 2011, this time with 4th Dimension. Houses were sold out, the same will happen soon this year too!
